Letter from the Community Services Director,

“Avalon the Beautiful – Livin’ the Beach Life!” will be our theme for the 2018 July 4th Parade and very fitting as we go into another beautiful spring and summer on Catalina Island.  July 4th on the island this year will be “spectacular” as we have worked with the Chamber of Commerce to deliver a new and improved firework show.  The community should be “blown away” as the firework count will be close to double of years past.  Staff has other new features planned for the day and we will role them out as we get closer to the event.  The day of events is not possible without the generous donations from the community, thank you to those that have donated in past years and those planning to in the upcoming year.

Avalon City Council recently approved a Recreation Master Plan  study process.  The study will take place over the course of the spring and early summer and include hosting community meetings for getting feedback on our dreams, wishes and aspirations for the recreation facilities and programs for the community of Avalon over the next 10 plus years.  Please plan to join us in this process as it will be open to the public as we seek out your vision for this great community.

Staff is working hard to bring back some of the old favorite programs and events over the next six months while also improving and adding to the level of programs currently offered to the community.  Please visit your Activity Guide for the right program for you!

Lastly, as we try and become more convenient for the community, we have recently added a recreation management software program for the ease in registering for programs and facility rentals.  In this issue of the Activity Guide (Page 8) you will find the easy steps needed to register online for our programs, check park availability and we are now credit card friendly.  If for any reason you have a problem, staff is available to assist you in the process at City Hall during normal business hours.

Thank you for your continued support, your ideas are always welcome and please free to reach me anytime at

dhuncke@cityofavalon.com or by phone at 310-510-0220.

Wishing you and your family good health,

Dan Huncke

Community Services Director
